Administration Reveals Federal Worker Layoffs as Shutdown Nears Third Week

Administration officials confirmed the start of government employee terminations on the end of the week, following through on prior threats linked to the ongoing US government shutdown, which is now poised to stretch into its third straight week.

Formal Statement and Initial Details

Russell Vought wrote on social media that “reductions in force have begun,” indicating the government’s procedure for letting employees go.

Although Vought provided no details on which agencies were impacted, a representative from the Treasury Department stated that layoff warnings had been issued within that department. Furthermore, a DHS spokesperson indicated that staff reductions would take place at the CISA. Moreover, a union for federal workers confirmed that members at the Education Department would be impacted by the staff cuts.

Union Response and Legal Challenges

Labor representatives warned that the terminations would have “devastating effects” on public services used by the public and vowed to challenge the actions in court.

This is shameful that the administration has used the government shutdown as an excuse to wrongfully terminate thousands of workers who provide critical services to the public across the country,” said Everett Kelley, representing the AFGE.

The AFL-CIO reacted to the announcement, declaring, “America’s unions will see you in court.”

Legislative Impasse and Budget Dispute

Congressional Democrats have declined to support a Republican-backed bill to reopen the government unless it contains healthcare-centered concessions. After multiple unsuccessful votes, the GOP leadership in the Senate have put the chamber in recess until the following week, indicating the standoff is unlikely to be resolved before then.

At a media briefing, the GOP leader in the House, Mike Johnson, blasted opposition lawmakers for not supporting the Republican bill, which was approved in the lower chamber on a near party-line vote.

“This is the last paycheck that 700,000 federal workers will see until opposition leaders decide to do their job and end the shutdown,” the speaker said. Beginning shortly, American service members, many of whom live paycheck to paycheck, are going to miss a full paycheck.”

Legal and Operational Constraints

Last week, unions sought a court injunction to block the administration from carrying out any layoffs during the funding gap. Moreover, a court official directed the government to provide specifics on termination strategies, impacted departments, and if any government staff had been recalled to execute layoffs.

An analysis argued that a government shutdown limits the ability of the administration to carry out firings, referencing guidance that acknowledged any long-term staff cuts need to have been initiated prior to the funding expired.

Impact on Workers

These terminations occurred on the very day that government employees received only a incomplete payment for the final days of the previous month but excluding the start of October, since funding lapsed at the beginning of the month.

Max Stier, the president of the non-profit Partnership for Public Service, criticized the political stalemate’s effect on federal employees.

“It is wrong to make government staff suffer because our leaders in Congress and the White House have failed to keep our federal operations open and operational,” the advocate stated. “Our flight regulators, veterans’ healthcare providers, smoke jumpers and food inspectors are not at fault for this funding crisis.”

A notable point is that members of Congress and top administration officials are continuing to be paid amid the shutdown.
