Fury Erupts as Trump's Comments on Rob Reiner Ignites Sharp Criticism

Figures from both sides of the partisan spectrum and the Hollywood industry are uniting to denounce former President Donald Trump for his remarks following the shocking passing of acclaimed filmmaker Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele.

An Inflammatory Social Media Statement

Following the discovery of the couple dead at their Los Angeles residence, Trump posted on social media to label the late director as "anguished and struggling". The post, he asserted Reiner's death was "because of the anger he provoked others through his enormous, unyielding, and incurable affliction with a mind-crippling disease known as TRUMP DERANGEMENT SYNDROME".

His comments then pivoted to praising his own achievements, juxtaposing Reiner's alleged "raging obsession" and "clear paranoia" with what Trump described as the "unprecedented era of America".

Police Update and Arrest

Police have since confirmed the detention of the couple's adult son, Nick, on suspicion of murder in relation to the case. It is reported his bail was established at a substantial amount.

A Wave of Condemnation from Celebrities and Politicians

The response to Trump's words was immediate and harsh.

This is a vile and despicable statement,” said actor Patrick Schwarzenegger.

Media personality Whoopi Goldberg, who called Reiner a close acquaintance, similarly condemned the remarks. She pointed to prior rhetoric from Trump regarding political violence, demanding, "Do you have no shame? Is it possible to get any worse?"

The state of California's Governor, Gavin Newsom, succinctly wrote, "He is a sick man."

Echoing this sentiment, Congressman Maxwell Alejandro Frost declared, "What a contemptible piece of garbage."

Senator Chris Murphy added, "Trump has just lost it. Now implying the Reiners caused their own murder because they didn’t support him. Deeply disturbing."

Rebuke from His Own Party

A number of GOP lawmakers also expressed disapproval.

Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene stated that the situation was "a family tragedy, not about politics or political enemies". She also mentioned challenges with addiction and psychological well-being some families face.

Fellow GOP congressman, Thomas Massie, called Trump's remarks "unacceptable and disrespectful" given the circumstances. He openly dared members in his party to defend the statements.

The Director's History and Stance on Trump

Rob Reiner was long a outspoken critic of Donald Trump. In a past conversation, he stated Trump was "not psychologically suited" for the presidency. He had also warned about the dangers of authoritarian rule should Trump return to power.

"There is authoritarianism on the rise around the world," Reiner said. "Should the United States fall, there’s a danger that democracy collapse around the world."

Regardless of his pointed opposition, Reiner had in the past expressed "complete revulsion" and condemned political violence without reservation following the shooting of a different individual.

A Notable Connection: The Art of the Deal

Adding a layer of past connection, Michele Reiner, previously Michele Singer, was the photographer who captured the photograph for Donald Trump's 1987 book, The Art of the Deal.

Rob Reiner had previously shared the story of the photo shoot, mentioning Trump's demand for "special hairspray" as posing on a high-rise overlooking Central Park.
