The Contents of that Case Henry Unlocks in Stranger Things?

For much of season 5 of the popular Netflix show, the young Holly Wheeler and Max find themselves trapped within a psychic prison built from the past of Henry Creel. Their quest for an escape route in the pivotal sixth episode forces them to relive a life-altering moment from Henry's early years—an event that potentially carries the key to defeating him permanently.

Heads Up: This article details significant events for *Stranger Things* season 5, volume 2.

Unearthing the Secrets of the Cavern

Upon meeting Max in the mental landscape called Camazotz, Holly discovers she is sheltering in a cave that Henry is terrified of. An accidental discovery a viewing device found in Henry's old home helps Holly understand that the source of fear lies beyond the cave. By aligning her view with the shape, she and Max suddenly fall into a subterranean passage.

In this place, they observe a Henry as a boy encounter an injured and paranoid man. As the boy offers aid, the man fires a gun, wounding the boy in the hand. Fighting for his life, Henry kills the man with a rock. "Is this what corrupted him?" Holly questions through tears. Essentially, yes, but the event involved more than a simple act of survival.

In keeping with mysteries in volume 2, the full story behind the mine shaft incident was first explored the theatrical production Stranger Things: The First Shadow.

An Interdimensional Incident and Stolen Research

The play reveals the legendary naval test, which allegedly sent a U.S. Navy ship into a realm later called the Abyss. It faced creatures, and the lone returnee was the captain, who came back in a catatonic condition with an different blood composition.

That survivor's offspring, Martin Brenner, sought to replicate this experiment in the Nevada desert. But a disloyal lab worker stole research materials to hand over to the Russian agents, who were keen to start their version of the tests. The man in the tunnel was that very thief.

So, What's in the Case?

Considering what is revealed about the doctor's experiments, the briefcase would assuredly have some of Captain Brenner's infected blood. In the scene, Henry is wounded and bleeding. It's probable he was infected upon opening the case, leading to the awakening of his powers—abilities he would inadvertently transfer to the kids Brenner would experiment on.

Alternatively, the case could have held exotic matter that later made its way to the Hawkins lab, where it maintains the stability of the Upside Down. The stage play explains that the boy ended up in the Abyss, coming back hours later as a different person. As a youth, he battles the whispers of a sinister presence, much like how the character Will was possessed by the Mind Flayer in the past.

A Weaponized Emotion

His lasting fear of that cave demonstrates how deeply scarring the event was for him. Even as he controls the army of monsters and seeks to merge the Abyss into Hawkins, a fragment of his psyche remains. Vecna uses fear, and the show is setting up a climactic battle between him and Will, who has confronted his own deepest fears to fortify himself.

Will's growth has neutralized a key tactic of Vecna. Crucially, Will now knows what Vecna himself fears, which could provide a critical advantage in the endgame conflict to come.
